FOOD PACKAGING PAPER TYPES
Parchment/Baking Paper
Made from the acid-treated pulp, the acid modifies the cellulose to make it smoother and impervious to water and oil, to add some wet strength. It is not a good barrier to air and moisture, is not heat sealable, and is used to pack fats, such as butter and lard.
Greaseproof Paper
Greaseproof paper is used to wrap snack foods, cookies, candy bars, and other oily foods, a use that is being replaced by plastic films.
PACKAGING PAPER TYPES
Kraft paper
Kraft paper is available in several forms: natural brown, unbleached, heavy-duty, and bleached white. Natural kraft is the strongest of all paper and is commonly used for bags and wrapping. It is also used to pack flour, sugar, and dried fruits and vegetables.
Corrugated Board
The corrugated board is made with 2 layers of kraft paper with a central corrugating fluting paper. Fibreboard’s resistance to impact abrasion and crushing damage makes it widely used for shipping bulk food and case packing of retail food products.
PAPER BAG APPLICATIONS
Durability
Paper tears, plastic endures—durability matters.
Biodegradability
Paper decomposes naturally; plastic lasts for centuries.
Recyclability
Paper and plastic are recyclable; paper is easier to recycle.
Cost-Effectiveness
Affordable packaging, tailored to you.
PAPER PACKAGING WASTE
Cardboard
Cardboards are thick boxes with a wavy core. Keep packing tape on and flatten them to maximize space in recycling bins.
Cartons
Cartons like juice boxes and milk, soup, broth, and wine cartons are made of mostly high-grade paper. Should be rinsed properly before recycling.
Boxboard
This board packs cereals, cakes, gifts, medications, toiletries, shoes, and toothpaste. Remove any plastic liners before recycling
PAPER PACKAGING IS VERSATILE
Paper-based packaging offers exceptional versatility, making it suitable for a wide range of products. Whether you’re packaging small items, delicate goods, or bulky products, paper packaging can be customised to fit your specific needs. From paper-based void fills, through to custom inserts and more, paper packaging can be easily tailored in terms of size, shape, and design, allowing you to create packaging that perfectly showcases your products, whilst supporting the environment.
POPULAR PAPER FINISHES
1
Matte Finish
Matte packaging—soft, elegant, and perfect for luxury products.
2
Gloss Finish
Gloss packaging—shiny, modern, and attention-grabbing.
The first step in making paper packaging is the preparation of the raw materials. The primary raw material used is wood pulp, which can be obtained from various sources such as trees, recycled paper, or agricultural fibers. The wood pulp is processed and refined to remove impurities and create a pulp mixture.
02
Papermaking
The pulp mixture is then fed into a paper machine, which is a large industrial machine used to produce paper. The paper machine consists of several sections, including the headbox, wire section, press section, and drying section. In the headbox, the pulp mixture is evenly distributed onto a moving wire mesh, forming a thin layer of fibers.
03
Formation and Dewatering
As the pulp mixture moves through the wire section, water is drained from the fibers, and the fibers start to bond together to form a continuous sheet of paper. This process is known as formation and dewatering. The paper sheet is then pressed to remove more water and improve its strength.
04
Drying
After pressing, the partially formed paper is passed through a series of heated rollers or drying cylinders to remove the remaining moisture. The drying process ensures that the paper reaches the desired moisture content and becomes stable.
05
Coating and Finishing
Depending on the specific requirements of the paper packaging, additional steps may be taken to coat or finish the paper. Coating can be done to enhance the paper's surface properties, such as smoothness, brightness, or water resistance. Finishing processes, such as cutting, creasing, folding, and gluing, are also performed to shape the paper into the desired packaging form.
06
Printing and Design
Once the paper packaging is formed and finished, it can be printed on using various printing methods, such as offset printing, flexographic printing, or digital printing. Printing allows for customization, branding, and the inclusion of important information or designs on the packaging.
07
Quality Control and Packaging
Throughout the manufacturing process, quality control measures are implemented to ensure that the paper packaging meets the required standards. Once the paper packaging is deemed to be of satisfactory quality, it is packaged and prepared for distribution and use.
